You can probably get something half-decent on Amazon (I know, I know) whereas I buy most of my knives from Kent of Inglewood.
All I can really say is that, I'd go there at least for some advice, because if they want to do whittling the next most important element to consider is sharpening stones.
The most dangerous knife to it's wielder is a dull knife.
