Oh, I definitely am. Everyone views things through their own lens. But just because the majority holds a certain opinion doesn’t mean they’re not seeing it through a biased one too.
And to be clear, this isn’t an indictment of who Huberdeau is as a person, this is strictly about who he’s been as a hockey player, and what that’s meant for the Flames.
Last season was his strongest with us, but let’s be honest, it still only grades out as an okay season for a top-line winger. Ryan Donato put up more production on a brutal Blackhawks team.
I’m sure Huby’s a decent guy off the ice, but these last three seasons have been some of the least enjoyable for me, and he’s been a big part of that. He was brought in, and paid, as a superstar. And while this past year might feel a bit better, let’s not ignore the recency bias. He wasn’t bringing it consistently the last few years. There were more than a few games where it looked like the controller disconnected. And sure, he wasn’t the only one, guys like Lindholm and Kadri have had their share of brutal stretches too, but the team has been in a downward spiral, and Huberdeau’s at the core of that.
I’ll be glad when this chapter is closed. It feels like a perfect symbol of the Flames as a whole lately, celebrating a $10.5M, 60-point winger because “he tries hard sometimes."
I digress though, we don't really need to rehash this. It is what it is at this point and he has been a good pro.
