I don't think Conroy was backed into a corner. I think Treliving didn't do his due diligence, quit when his contract ran out and left Conroy holding the bag.
Conroy said at his first press conference that he wouldn't walk any player to free agency (Gaudreau and Tkachuk). He traded Hanifin/Zadorov/Lindholm instead of losing them for nothing. He moved Markstrom a year early (good move on his part) and now has Anderson coming to his last season. I think Anderson will be gone before training camp as Conroy knows that keeping anyone who doesn't want to be here is detrimental to the team.
