Bennett earned the contract though its just funny a few months ago it was being scoffed at that a team like the Flames or Leafs ect. would come along and give Bennett and 8x8. (like we have the post history to prove it)
Now its a hometown discount in Florida...big playoff run earned some big money

Yup...wining a Conn Smyth will do that.
Good move by Bennett IMO too. He gets the extra year, and I don't see him being the type of guy who would have had a long career unfortunately. He gets a tax break from being in Florida.
He also stays in Florida, where's he's a hometown favorite, and avoids being a pariah in another city. If he'd signed for $10 million/year in Toronto and reverted back to being a 25 goal and 50 point player, the city of Toronto would have not been so kind to him.
Florida may actually struggle to repeat. They've done a great job of keeping their core together, but that core is getting more injured and a few key players are getting old. Specifically, Bobrovsky has been incredible in the playoffs for the last 4 years. He's turning 37 now though.
