Has to play a role, probably might even be required to backcheck? Its possible that essentially running the Oilers for a decade how would that look on another team?

This. You cannot win a cup in the NHL based on skill alone. You either need so much talent on your roster that it is completely overwhelming - Drysaddle and McDavid aren't enough even as good as they are. Or you need a team with high end skill and an incredibly deep roster - see the Panthers.
It has been very obvious in two cup finals and deep cup runs, that McDavid and Drysaddle aren't going to burry pucks at the elite rates they do in the regular season, especially in the finals, so who picks it up? Those two certainly aren't checking like demons to make up for the lost production.
The Oilers are in woeful need of a forward like Coleman, and a defenceman like Andersson and an upgrade in net before they can win a cup imho. They don't have the cap room, assets or draft picks to make it happen so I am confident in saying they are likely post apex as a group now.
McDavid would be pretty dumb to commit to that team long term at this juncture if he has any aspirations of winning cups and would be wise to walk as a UFA to a situation where there is much more functional team set up. It's only going to get harder as they pay him again, bouchard and whoever else they need to try to bring in to win. He's also at or passing his peak and could easily be more of a 90-100point player that misses 10 games a year moving forward and that creates even more issues.
