I think it does get lost on folks just how difficult it it to draft a player who can be a 20 goal and 60 point player.
On one hand if you don't have any picks you can't ever draft somebody who hits that threshold or better. On the other having 6 picks in the first two rounds in a weaker draft class and all of them are after pick 15 you're lucky to find 2 players who play 200 games for your franchise. If you hit that fans still lament that you screwed the pooch in that draft if you didn't get any elite talent if those guys end up as a 25 goal winger and a 4th defenseman.
I think it's a major reason why teams have a hard time getting out of this middle tier. If you do draft well, you stay there, but can't get that elite talent to break out. If you draft poorly...well you fall back to where you have a chance to draft in the top 10.
