While I don't disagree, this gives no context. After ending the season early last year to have surgery, I would expect him to be both a little rusty as well as a little tentative to start. Plus, he was getting the tougher match-ups in the first half of the season. I wouldn't be overly concerned about his start because of it.
What matters to me is how he progressed in the season. He finished as a damn near elite goalie. That's not what i would expect out of him as an average. I think he is an excellent backup that helps you win, with the potential to be solid starter.
Wolf is going to be the starter this upcoming season. Vladar - from what we have been hearing - seems to be moving on. Do you feel more comfortable with the ~30 games or so that Cooley or Prosvetov will be playing, or would you have felt more comfortable with Vladar re-signed? I know I would pick Vladar.
Maybe Cooley or Prosvetov (or maybe the Flames sign someone else this off-season) will bring a Jennings trophy? Would love that to happen. I do think, however, that if I am forced to say whether the Flames took a step forward in the backup position, or a step backwards, I would have to say backwards. It will be curious to see how this affects the number of wins they accrue this upcoming season from the backup (whomever it may end up being - I think it will be Cooley, unless they make another move).
