That may be the case. But he’s the 2nd or 3rd best forward available. If the Flames are looking at ‘top UFA forwards’, rather than just zeroing in on Marner, Ehlers will almost certainly be a target.
As for the Flames having a mandate to be a Cup contender within 2-3 years, that’s the least surprising thing ever for a long-time fan of this franchise. As always, the strategic direction comes from Edwards, not hockey OPs. I’ll be surprised if the Flames make picks with both their 1st rounders at the draft.
