That does seem like as fair a deal as you could get when trading one of the top two defencemen in the entire league. A trade like that would be a great start to a rebuild. Obviously New Jersey is getting the best player in the deal so you would think the cost would be high. Only problem is that Hughes has a full NTC so he could dictate where he goes. If it’s only New Jersey that he is willing to be traded to, it could diminish the return.
Overall, a trade like that would be smart in the long run for Vancouver to do right now. It’s potentially 2 young top four defencemen, a top six forward and a first round pick. On top of that, it sets Vancouver up to likely be in the bottom 5 of the league next season and have a shot at McKenna. Obviously it’s mostly magic beans but if it’s clear that Hughes wants to leave, they should maximize his return and doing it early should do that.
