He can join them on an ATO (for example, Lipinski went to the Wranglers on an ATO last season after the Giants were eliminated).
It's kind of complicated:
- An unsigned player (drafted or not) can go to the AHL on a try-out deal after his junior season is done (this also applies to players who a sign a contract that starts the next season, e.g., Carter King).
- A player who was unsigned at the trade deadline who subsequently signed a contract for the current season cannot be sent to the AHL for the playoffs (e.g., Suniev).
- A player who was signed prior to the trade deadline but wasn't in the NHL at the trade deadline can be sent from the NHL to the AHL (e.g., Parekh).
