The same thing happened with Iginla and Kipper. The Flames refuse to see the writing on the wall and make proactive instead of reactive moves. It’s one of the reasons they stay in limbo.

Imagine if they dealt iggy and kipper when they clearly should have. At least 2 years before they moved iggy.

The Flames can’t replace talent like the teams in Florida or other desirable destinations can. Therefore, they can’t afford to mismanage assets.

Gaudreau 100% should have been traded. That was gross negligence.
Not getting young blue chip prospects for Tkachuk was unforgivable. Pick a lane!

I love Conroy and his vision for team building. I’m cautiously optimistic for the future. I just hope ownership doesn’t meddle with a lipstick on a pig move to try to gain 2 games of playoff revenue.
Iggy had a full NMC for his contract, Kipper had a full NMC until the 2012-13 season which was his last with CGY. They could just stay in CGY, or have full control of the destination the way Iggy did.

It would've been extremely difficult to trade Gaudreau during the pandemic in a cap strapped league, coming off two somewhat lackluster seasons(18G and 58P; 19G and 49P)... It would've been even more difficult to break the best line in the NHL midseason, of a team that was a clear contender, and CGY's best shot at a cup since 2004.

Hindsight is great, but there was a lot more affecting the decisions not to sell at the time.

Also the Flames drafting and development during the Kipper and Iggy years resulted in a total of 1 1st rounder in Backlund turning into an impact NHLer. Jankowski, Baertschi, Erixon, Nemisz, Irving, Pelech and Chucko were the 7 whiffs on 1st rounders! We would've just gotten more of this type of player the way we did with Klimchuk and Poirier from trading Iginla and Bouwmeester.
