People around here don't seem to see the impact of bottoming out. It takes 5+ years to recover financially as an owner. They don't get merch sales, playoff revenue and the list goes on.
More oilers 97/29 jersey were sold in Alberta than any flames jersey in the last 10 years. I also would bet you that in the "youth market" that disparity would be even higher and the "youth" are your market in 10 years.

I fully recognize I'm wearing the 'fan' hat and not an owner one. I can't speak for the merchandise sales etc., but I also know these owners have thriving businesses outside of the Flames, and securing the top flight talent (97 and 29 were top 5 picks) where they will REALLY benefit often requires years of hardship first.
I think of the 10 year+ effect of the 04 run in this market. That type of excitement is worth chasing at all costs, IMO.
