Fortunately, ENGs tend to be pretty randomly distributed among teams that lose games. Which means they tend to slightly increase the positive goal differentials of good teams and the negative goal differentials of bad teams, without really affecting the rankings.

I’m open to seeing the data, if you have any. I don’t think coaches are equally cavalier about when they will do so and encouraging(!) defensive play when it’s done. My hypothesis is that a lot of the uptick in scoring in recent years has been due to a light bulb finally going off league wide that losing by 1 or 10 is the same thing.
