You cannot trust the Americans, and Canadians need to ACT in their own self interests and do everything necessary to protect Canada. If we care about Canada.

This is why I am personally very disappointed so far with Canada’s actions. Not words- which are meaningless- our actions, which have been and continue to be weak and hollow.
I suspect you could find many who would not agree that it is in the interest to the US to attack, invade, annex, engage in economic warfare with... Canada. And i believe there is a way above 0 chance that the military apparatus that existed in the US 2 months ago would have resisted those orders, that is why Trump is replacing them, and that is why Canada needs to have continuing engagement with the exiting layer of leadership to make sure that there is a void that can be filled if there is any internal strife in their ranks.

I also think it's incredibly hard to judge the actions of Canada in the moment because so much of it by necessity is behind closed doors. We know they are engage with Europe, we don't know to what end. We can be sure that Canada is constantly engaged with the Trump administration and we don't know to what end. We know there are active internal conversations about upgrading infrastructure, we don't know if, how, when any of that will come to fruition. It's been 6 weeks and these are years long projects.

We do know that Canada can't be seen to be publicly winning in these negotiations because our negotiating partner is a very dumb zero sum thinker who only wants to see his partner lose to feel better about himself. So if we end this with basically the exact same situation and appearing to lose, that would be a massive victory for Canada (which is basically what happened in 2018/19)
