It is pure projection because they are trying to cope with how to think of themselves as strong good person, even though they have adopted a position of pure cowardliness.

Instead of defending their country, they are cowardly sucking up to the foreign leader that is attacking Canada in some pathetic attempt gain favour with the attacker. Deep down they see themselves as a loser who could never defend their friends family and country, and accepted default into their heart. So instead they are selling their friends and family our, in some vain attempt to save their own skin.

There are always weaker people who act like this. The Simpsons did a good job parodying it when Kent Brockman immediately sold out humanity with his "I, for one, welcome our new insect overlords" bit. But they are dangerous because they are the first ones to break, stabbing their family, friends, and countrymen in the back when they do.

And really, can you expect someone who is acting so pathetically to have the strength to be honest with themselves about what they are doing? Of course they take the route of denial, and accuse others of what they are subconsciously saying to themselves.
