Even when we ice a contender free agency needs to be used more as a tool to add a 1–2-year piece. Strategic signings, not big game hunting like Nashville.
Once you have a prospect base built as well, you can get into the trade market as its easier to swallow trading a prospect when you have a young team that is contending and adding age-appropriate players.

I think that sequence was more due to poor professional scouting. It was not a mistake at the time to identify that the team needed more goals and a right shot right winger. The issue was people identified / available were not fits.
