Canadians were happy with the extremely high (by global standards) immigration rates of 7-10 years ago. It’s only when those already high rates spiked dramatically higher during the post-covid housing crisis that the public turned against the Liberals on the issue. The public perception is that backdoor immigration through student visas and TFWs got out of control. Even the government’s own advisors warned them that bringing in that many new Canadians that quickly would only worsen the housing crisis, and that’s exactly what happened.
Most Canadians (and Americans) support immigration. But like people everywhere else, they want that immigration to be selective and controlled. Support falls away when authorities lose control.
Just dismissing this as millions of voters suddenly becoming ignorant bigots is a sure-fire way to get your ass handed to you in elections.
