Trick rear differentials can mask the transverse layout as has been proven by the past EVO's, Focus RS, and the MK8 Golf R. My MK7 felt 95% of the time like driving a GTI. I spent a few hours in an MK8 this summer and it feels like a different car. The interior is an unfortunate downgrade (materials and infotainment although I liked the new seats better) but that shouldn't be your priority when choosing a hot hatch. It should be what's more fun to drive and the MK8 is considerably more fun.
