Basically, Montreal only gets Florida's pick if Calgary finishes in the bottom ten. If the Flames finish, say, 11th from the bottom, Montreal will be selecting 11th overall.
The frightening scenario is the Panthers are riddled with injury and on such a hangover that their first falls inside the top 10 which would give the Flames their 2026 1st instead of 25 and then the Habs would get the Flames unless it was 1st overall. There is a doomsday scenario where the Flames have no picks in the 2025 1st round and gift second overall to Montreal but on the flip side they would have 4 unprotected 1sts in 2026 (Flames, Knights, Devils, Panthers). So unlikely though as the Devils and Panthers would have to have horrendous seasons.
