Case in point, Ovechkin. When he got older, his numbers stayed the same, but he was simply not the same force he was on the ice when he was young. Ovechkin was top 10 in hits many seasons, and would punish guys up and down the ice.

As for McDavid, he relies heavily on speed for large parts of his game. Posters are correct, that McDavid wouldn't, for example, lose his vision on the PP, but his ability to storm into the offensive zone and blow past defenders is gone with his speed. That's a huge part of his current game.

Players also lose the ability to constantly engage physically as they get older. You become far more injury prone and brittle as you get older. So you either back off or end up like Forsberg, injured all the time.
