You're hoping to hit on that 2nd round pick and end up with a solid player who will hopefully be a part of your organization for over a decade and throughout the prime of his career.
Throwing that chance away to add an expensive depth player to a roster that likely isn't even going to make the playoffs is not what I want to see. Stockpile picks, draft a TON of players. Don't bleed them like the Flames have always done.

Yep! That's the kind of trade you make when you've built a good young core that are mostly on their ELCs/cheaper second contracts, and you want to add some depth/beef to the bottom of the lineup. Not the kind of trade you make while you're heading into 3-5 years of misery.
I have no problem signing a guy like Colton for ~3-4 years, if he's UFA while we're rebuilding, but please stop paying for players that we don't need.
