If Mercer and a pick was offered the deal would have been done. Here is what I believe might have happened. I stress the part where it says I believe, not what happened, just what I can patch together. Initial package offered by NJ was
Alexander Holtz, 2025 1st rnd pick (lottery protected), and a another late pick for Markstrom with some amount of retention. Flames want Mercer instead of Holtz and a better return for the retention. NJ sweetens the deal by adding Casey. Conroy is going to take that return, even approached Markstrom about it to see if he is ok with NJ, but backs out after discussions with other members of his management team who convince him to stay the course on insisting on Mercer. Talks stall and the media throws everything they can think of our there as to why. NJ comes back and offers to do the deal with no retention, Casey comes out of the deal though. So the new offer is Holtz, 2025 1st for Markstrom with no retention. Flames management still insistant on Mercer in the deal, pick is negotiable. That is where we are.
