Maybe I'm off base, but if I were to theorize, I think having McConaughey in the lead role hurt its initial reception, just because he isn't the guy most would peg for a science fiction epic with strong emotional themes, but putting the typecasting aside, he did great.
Repeat viewings are where the greatness of films is determined.
For example, Dark Knight has 10/10 rewatchability. Interstellar isn't far behind. I'd give it a 9/10. It can be a lot if you're not ready for the magnitude and length of it, but that's it.
