Okay, a few thoughts:

Conroy just rolled the clock back on the role and type of player Tanev is by 14 years. Grushnikov sounds like a prototypical Tanev replacement, but is just 20. He offers a nice complement to the offensive d-men we have in Poirier or Brustewicz in the system.

He adds a 2nd round pick for a pure defensive d-man. I know his ask was a 1st round pick, but that's how negotiation goes. You always ask for a bit more than what you realistically expect, and then the market meets your real ask. Conroy got the pick he wanted here.

The conditional 3rd is a nice throw in. If it happens, cool. If not? No biggie.

Considering Tanev is a pure rental for Dallas, I think this is a pretty solid deal. Getting top offensive prospects or 1st round picks was always a bit too much to expect. Tanev could get hurt in his next game blocking a shot and be out for the season. There's just too much risk around a guy like Tanev to break the prospect bank so to speak.

Here's the thing...look at the young defense corps that Conroy has now...

Poirier-Brustewicz
Grushnikov-Morin
Solovyov-Kuznetsov
Hurtig-Jurmo

All these guys are 23 or younger.

Not to mention that we still will have Weegar, Andersson, and very likely, Kylington for the near future. I'm pretty pleased with that group overall. Perhaps one more really good d-man prospect with all the draft capital, and we have a new d-corps for the future. Not every guys will pan out, but I'm betting about 4 out of those 8 have long NHL careers.
