We know both players for the most part out performed their 6 year deals and have/having a career year in their contract year where each player looks to be one of the best all around wingers in the game. It is almost certain because Treliving opted to wait instead of signing the players to 9.5 and $10M deals he will now have to shell out significantly more to keep Nylander just like he went to $10.5M with Gaudreau
Differences seem to be the fact that Nylander is negotiating in season where Johnny cut it off when a deal couldn’t be done. Nylander seems like he wants to stay in Toronto more than Johnny wanted to stay in Calgary. There isn’t a home town or home area that Nylander is eager to get back to. Nylander’s dad played in the league and I believe is playing a much larger factor in squeezing the Leafs on this deal than we realized.
I have a hard time seeing Toronto keeping Nylander and then giving Marner a new contract with a raise next year.

Marner seems to be the potential odd man out given Nylanders consistency and rise this season. I’d guess in a year we’ll be hearing whispers of a Marner deal. Years ago there was conversation of Marner+ for McAvoy. Marner is very good but this playoffs we’ll see if he disappears. Something has to give with the aging defence and at some point a deal will have to be made to get that in order.
