I can’t see how batting the puck in a way that after you lose sight of it, it goes off the dasher and then the back of your leg and into a scrum could be possibly considered an advantage, especially to the extent that it could overturn the call on the ice.

2. Why was Dallas given the opportunity to discuss with the referee whether they should challenge the call before they decided to challenge it? This significantly reduced the risk of losing the call that is intended to discourage teams from making borderline challenges like this one.
Hard to answer #1. For #2, I don't think the announcers were correct on them discussing it, I believe they were trying to show him the time the hand pass occurred.

Allowing a team to go back a few seconds to a missed call in the zone needs to end. It makes for a situation where the attacking team can't legally score without clearing the zone, but if they give the puck up then the other team can. There's no reason a missed call should give the other team a free play, and if the team spots an obvious missed call, they could send a player down ice and take some chances.
