I get your overall point ... don't aim for middling assets, but moving one year of Toffoli for a guy that posts 0.5 PPG and plays in your middle six and kills penalties while adding a third round pick that looks to be interesting isn't trading for filler.

He's a filler players in my eyes because he likely has a stint here and is gone before we're even competitive. So to me it makes almost no difference if he's there getting 40 pts or some guy from the wranglers is in his spot getting 30 pts.
But as I've said I'm not even worried about that trade its over. Don't go spend our upcoming UFAs in similar trades. Look for quality of assets over quantity and try to focus on assets that can be here for the long term. You hit on a guy like Rasmus with a 2nd rounder and that is massive value.
The Flames best chance at turning things around quickly would be to bottom out the next few seasons s and land their next core and supplement that core with players they pick or draft through their UFAs and current prospects.
