By not having kids at all, I spent all the extra money they would have needed for university on lavish vacations, fancy meals and luxury items for my home.

Have you recently driven a car or walked down the street? My god, horrifically useless and stupid people are everywhere. I can't imagine the sheer percentage of parents that are left with disappointment or horror.
I mean you're right, you can't change a thing unless you commit murder. People get married, buy cars and start new jobs all the time. And how often do people regret it and need to get divorced, bail on the purchase or quit? For at least 2 decades or more; hell a homicide sentence in Canada doesn't even last that long.
