Proving once again it’s who you know and not always what you know that counts, Patrick found himself out of work, despite guiding the Ice to the WHL’s best record the last two seasons.

He says he wasn’t surprised nor disappointed, understanding people who run the team will want to hire their own people.

But he was caught by surprse and might not have gone anyway

But Patrick wasn’t ready, which speaks volumes about how stunned he was the Ice melted in Canada’s coldest capital city.

“I wasn’t ready to go somewhere right away,” he said. “Mentally, I couldn’t jump in. A week after the Winnipeg Ice were sold, I couldn’t say now I’m the coach of another team. Yes, I still had the coaching bug and the itch. But if you’re not 100% in… you’re doing a disservice to yourself, the organization and the players.

“That’s where I was one week, two weeks, three weeks after the team was sold.”
