Disagree entirely. Seems like the club is starting to focus on asset value and protect development.

The team is potentially moving on from Backlund, changing from their typical country club mentally. The negotiations with Phillips are a positive sign. Much better than signing some journeyman veteran.

Teams are successful in the NHL now when they have a steady stream of cap controlled players, manage their assets, make quality trades, etc... With the new draft rules, the odds of drafting the next McDavid in the lottery are slim. You could finish last place 5 years in a row and still not end to with that. You can pull a Chicago and dip down for a #1 pick, but even they have set themselves up well to pull up quickly.
