I think Treliving who is well connected, had an eye to this last offseason, finding out that Dubas could be out the door this offseason, and also knowing he'd be in line for the job.
At that time too, he knew that probably only in a perfect season scenario does both he and Sutter stay after this year. When things didn't go as planned as the season wore on, on the ice and just as much off, I think Treliving knew that the Leafs job is a once in a career opportunitity and became tough to pass up that possibility considering the hurdles here.
I think some of the players that he was friendly with knew that too, certainly before the end of the season, that BT was going to be moving on, which made them reevaluate things because he was their reason for being happy here.
Even if Sutter got tossed first, I don't think it means Treliving stays either...it's been framed that way but it was an easier out for BT. The Leafs GM job is the most prestigious it could be said in hockey.
I expect a lot of "process" chatter tomorrow. He deals well with the media in general but can get pretty defensive too...we will see how long that lasts with all the reporters and other out there looking for hot takes each day...again this was media market that called Leafs goaltenders parents to get injury updates on their son.
