Some did, but whether that's representative of a more widely held view or just what a few people want isn't totally clear:

Nicole Johnston, an Indigenous advocate from the Piikani Nation, said she and others asked Calgary to drop Canada Day celebrations altogether in 2021, following the discovery of children buried in unmarked graves at a Kamloops, B.C. residential school.

She said in 2022 they asked if fireworks could be cancelled out of respect.

“But instead, you know, they went ahead and had them right next to the Children’s Memorial,” said Johnston, speaking of the temporary memorial to children who died in residential schools which now sits on the steps of Calgary’s municipal building.

Johnston said she met with city officials again earlier this year on the matter, and she continues to relay messages to them about what her community would like to see.

“What I’m getting from the people is, I think the mayor should step up and apologize for the first year that she was in office for not understanding . . . what the fireworks meant for Indigenous people,” said Johnston.

And this didn't come out of nowhere. Here's an article about the same thing last year where the city was saying they'd be reviewing the whole thing for 2023:
