That's exactly what happened when my kids were in elementary. Mine weren't involved but the bully was actually deemed the victim because of how hard done by they thought he was. Nevermind that he picked on half a dozen kids.
Like you, I showed my girls some basic things to do as a last resort. Aim for the nose with your fist or the crotch with your knee.

The one case we got it wasn't my son involved, but a smaller "nerdy" kid that was being bullied.
The boy told the kid to leave the other one alone. The kid didn't listen. After the second request the kid got dropped and we got a call from the Principal, who luckily knew my boy from the wrestling team.
