Do we care? Nope.

Weak characters.
I think that this was one of the biggest failures of the ST. While they had this great idea of handing the torch from the original trilogy characters to a new era of characters, they really didn't do a great job of character development

Fin - Defecting storm trooper (Yes) possibly Force Sensitive (Yes) Principled and willing to die for the republic to whooo guy and comedy foil for Poe by the time the third movie came around.

Poe - probably the best developed character, super pilot, heroic, willing to mutiny when what's her face looked like she was destroying the rebellion. then in the third movie, just flat and relegated to basically making moves on Kerri Russell in the third movie

Rose - In the second movie she was a risk taker, she had a decent idea of a story, was a love interest to Fin. Then in the third movie, and I still laugh at this . Fin "Well I'm glad we're friends now, I'm going into the ultimate all hands on deck battle for the fate of the galaxy, sorry you can't go". Rose - "Yeah I have to study"

Rey - Came from nothing, super over powered off of the start, resourceful and brave. In the second movie took on Luke and pushed him to be better and refind the force. In the third movie she seemed so flat and cookie cutter, but Daisy mailed in her performance. And I'm convinced that the Rey is a Palpatine concept was spur of the moment as a fan service to a pissed off fan base. If she had been a palpatine from the start they could have made her way more interesting by being tempted by the Dark Side of the Force and her inherent nature.

Ren - Just a terrible character from the start, and not that intriguing. He never evolved beyond a petulant spastic teenager from the start, I remember when we first saw him I thought it was a cool look. But as soon as we learned more about him and did the obvious comparison to Anakin/Vader his character was doomed. The third movie turn to the light and then his fight with Palpatine and his death was just bad.

The other problem is that this movie didn't have a great smart villain. Snoke in the first movie was more background, who is he intriguing. Then in the second movie he had a redshirt death, in the third movie we find out that he was born in the jar.

Palpatine was just stupid, there was no subtlety to him at all. It didn't help that JJ tried to re-invent the whole really good Sith Lore that was one of the better parts of the PT. Instead we get Palpatine on a stick in a arena with thousands of cultists, and a whole stupid, sacrifice me concept to Rey, as a twisted version of Strike me down and I will become more powerful then you can imagine.

Oh wait the other villain. Hux, went from devious and nasty in the first movie. To a target of prank phone calls, and an idiot in the second movie. To an I'm a spy and a toss away death in the third movie, there was no point to his character.

Star Wars needs to take a chance with a new trilogy. Having Rey to come back to build the Jedi order makes no sense because we know that a Jedi order means a rise of the Dark side.

I also agree with an earlier post that the Sequel did more to just wreck the lore of the OT then was believable.
