it measures total points that a team needs in order to eliminate the other team - including points that you earn plus points that the other team doesn't earn. Once you get to zero, you've eliminated them.
So the Jets need a combination of 16 points that they earn or the Flames lose, and they eliminate us. We need a combination of 25 points to eliminate them.
So the CGY/WPG game is literally a 4 point game because if the Flames beat the Jets in regulation, the Flames earn 2 plus the Jets lost 2, so the Flames' number drops by 4 points.
This is the most logical way to look at it - trying to guess what record you need is pointless, because you don't know what record the other team will have either. Also, what is a game in hand worth, etc?
With this, it's a simple race to zero. And you can see the gap (16 to 25), plus, it is clear when you aproach zero, that you're getting close.
