Selling would definitely help in a very good draft. You may be right that next year they could be better, but you have to ask yourself the question, that even then, would this team be a contender? The answer in my opinion is no. We aren’t in the same league as the top teams.
Absolutely I think we could improve, especially with solid goaltending but we would be bounced in the first round. Time to sell, and rebuild with some elite talent. Ownership seems to think that fans would stay away from games if this was the path chosen. I disagree. I would support a team that has exciting pieces in the pipeline and continues to build the right away. Results often come faster than expected. Look what happened when Johnny, Monohan and Tkachuk joined the scene. They didn’t win a cup but there was a likeability factor and some exciting talent.
I believe fans would show patience and with some shrewd moves from the GM things could change quickly. Will ownership see things this way? Highly unlikely as they seem determined to get those home playoff games at all costs. But this version of the Flames is mediocre at best even with good goaltending.
