It’s a social anxiety thing. People tip because they want to confirm to societal expectations. So when there is a tip option where there used to not be one there is a fear of being judged for not tipping and an annoyance of tipping being expanded if they do tip.
The point of the tip line is to create an uncomfortable situation on people to generate more wages for employees so the owners can retain staff without increasing base wage or raising prices.
