An interesting approach to settling ties and eliminating 3-on-3 is to have a shoot-out at the beginning of the game and have a winner of the tie game pre-determined, but then only awarded a single point. Makes teams play hard for the win in regulation rather than playing for the loser point. So two points for a regulation win, one point for the predetermined shootout, and no points for a loss.
