Because thats what people who donated to their party and voted them in wanted them to do.
Theres lots of BS reasons, people who live, breathe and operate within Government dont see this as real, actual money, to them its a line-item in a ledger book.
I'm not going to advocate that Governments should be run as businesses, that is not a theory that I hold to, Governments and Businesses are two entities whose goals are inherently divergent.
That being said, I also do not hold to the theory that Governments should be 100% completely divorced from real-world economic realities. They have different opportunities and strategies available to them to accomplish their respective goals.
Because that line of thinking where the money doesnt matter and the rules are made up is what gets societies to the brink of systemic collapse which they then just shrug off on to the next generations by instituting slap-dash temporary solutions and kicking the can down the road.
