Panthers had a presidents trophy winning team and decided to dismantle it because they lost in the 2nd round to Tampa, we will see how that works out for them. We are also ignoring the other two things they gave up.

Panthers had to dismantle it, as they couldn't afford to keep both Huberdeau and Weegar due to cap issues ( Bobo doesn't help).
Posters here criticized the trade from the Panthers perspective, but they were backed into a corner just like the Flames. Each team got what they wanted out of the trade.
The Panthers retooled a bit with a younger, better player signed to a manageable contract. They did what they could with two expiring contracts they couldn't afford and likely didn't want to go many years with.
The Flames extended their contention window, or so we hope.
