I've heard him make the point before...as well as when he wanted to trade Gio at his peak and Gaudreau if he didn't sign going into his last year. All of these points have been mentioned over the year by posters on this site. They all have merit in my opinion.
Personally I'm always torn by being a super fan that wants to win and what is proper asset management. I find myself justifying the moves the team makes far too often. With Huberdeau, the way I justify it, as I would have with Gaudreau, is that the league will value him at his AAV (with inflation) over the life of the deal, so even if he doesn't work out here, he is a movable asset. We may have to pay extra to move him, but he's likely not an asset that goes to zero.
My example: Someone buys a Prada bag for $6k. An obscene amount of money at the time for a bag. Three years later with light use that bag is worth $5500, maybe more. So the real cost has been storage and the $500 difference.
On the other hand, you go get a "special edition" bag from diesel and pay $3k. Three years pass...and so does the fad that was pushing the price, and you've got a bag worth a few hundred bucks to a collector and a $2700 loss...aka Darnell Nurse.
