If Kadri is great, it's all worth it. If he's bad, it obviously isn't. If he's just kinda average (most likely) then it's a more interesting question...
1. If Monny ends up spending lots of time on LTIR (I think of NYR buying out Lundqvist...and then him having a career ending medical issue before the next season even started) = regretful
2. If Monny bounces back to be reasonably productive - even if that means trading him mid-season for a conditional pick = probably regretful
3. If Monny is munching popcorn this feels a little better, though the cost to dump him would get cheaper with every passing day of the season.
The one other consideration is that Kadri is unlikely to fetch any assets near the end of his deal. The alternative path of waiting on Monny and using the 1st(+) on a different player with moderate term is that they could have salvage value down the road (e.g. Gourde, Dvorak, or even Josh Anderson who has 5 more yrs, but he'll be roughly Kadri's current age 4 yrs from now).
OTOH we get to integrate Kadri from day 1, and we're unlikely to find anyone else with a similar skillset.

You do realize the season that Kadri just had is better than Monahan's best season playing on the top line with Gaudreau right? He is also a far better defensive player.
