The one thing I could offer to maybe justify the horrible trade value in that BOS/CGY deal is Boston is over the cap today, and the trade reduces their cap this season by $1.25M but also reduces it by $6M next season - and next season they are likely lined up to be hit with a $4.5M bonus overage because of Krejci and Bergeron’s current deals.
…but yeah, it’s not good value. We also have seen crazier things like Pacioretty being traded with a sweetener just to move his one year due to cap considerations.
