I'd have much preferred they beat the price Seattle gave for Bjorkstrand, even - obviously not the same tier of player but the cap space is just so much more valuable right now than anything else, and of all the high-earning player types, scoring wingers are the least valuable assets based on the transactions we've seen this summer. Even on that front, if you were going to allocate cap space to a scoring winger, the better bet would be to pay Mangiapane whatever it took to lock him up for 8 years than do this.
I wouldn't have given him 10 million per and I wouldn't have given a term over 6 years. Even 6x9.5 is a bit risky from where I sit. This deal is absurd.
Hope I'm wrong... and hope Weegar comes in for a more reasonable figure.

This is what it takes to sign a top player to a contract in Calgary (and probably any other Canadian city). Otherwise you are trading him for futures, rebuilding and hoping you don’t have to pay whoever you draft even more before they bolt like Tkachuk, and you are in the same cycle of no star players sticking forever.
