First of all, no player is worth the same amount to every team. It took years of roster turnover for the Flames to find the ideal linemates to maximize Gaudreau's potential. Now he has to start all over with a new team. You can't just drop a guy into a different roster with a different system and a different talent level and expect the same results.
Second, the Flames' offer was about getting Gaudreau to forgo free agency. Now he's a free agent and nobody needs to pay him to give it up
Third, he has painted himself into a corner where only three teams, and maybe only two, are in a position to bid on his services.
He has drastically restricted his market power.
