The draft is a lottery, but the draft is also the building block of your team’s success. Teams that win Cups, generally speaking, win because of the stars they drafted.
The Flames went the opposite way. They tried to build through free agency and lots of mistakes were made that set the team back.
As I’ve said many times, I believe that the Brad Treliving rushed the rebuild. 2015 was just a mirage and management went all in on Monahan, Bennett and arguably Tkachuk. In hindsight, that wasn’t nearly enough pieces.
This team needed to continue building patiently, not trade away draft picks that could’ve been a Barzal, a Hintz, a Kyrou, a Debrincat and etc. This is how you build up necessary depth to be a contender in the NHL and that’s the blueprint this organization needs to follow in their next rebuild. No quick fixes, no jumping the gun, just be patient and build up your arms through the draft. In the end, it doesn’t have to be Bedard, whoever they do get, just please, let the team ripen naturally.
