There was no cap in those days. The post-surgery Gary Roberts wasn't worth anywhere near the equivalent of $10 million against today's cap. Maybe Eichel will be, but he has to prove it.
And that still doesn't address the fact that Eichel is the first player ever to get this type of surgery, and there is absolutely zero clinical data on people returning from that surgery to play high-frequency, high-intensity contact sports. If he isn't at least nervous about it, he's an idiot.
