Dunno about that.
Adam Fox won it last year as a second year pro after have zero Norris votes as a rookie (he did have a handful of Calder votes, but was still only 4th in voting)
Erik Karlsson won it as a 3rd year pro having never recieved a Norris vote prior.
If the points are there, it's usually enough. When Gio won it, he was second in D scoring but also first in the league plus/minus which for some reason beyond my comprehension is still a thing.
Overall, without PP time OK58 can't possibly come close to being among D scoring leaders like Fox. But it isn't the reputation award it's touted as. Otherwise Shea Weber would have more of those than his old partner Roman Josi.

I was afraid that Seattle was going to pick him over Gio and am actually still a little surprised that they didn't. I suppose it all depends on whether they flip Gio at the trade deadline and what the return is, but I have a feeling they are going to regret not taking him when they had the chance.

Seattle has been the anti Vegas.
Where the Knights went for hidden-gem types like Shea Theodore and William Karlsson, the Kraken just took the biggest names they could find on a roster... Wennberg... Eberle... Giordano.
