Hopefully they come down hard enough that it is easier for most to buck the crowd next time, but not so hard the push those who were followers or silent further away. Internet self righteousness isn't going to net a positive number of friends in the long run.

Seriously? The mob you are referring to is standing up against the attitudes and actions that were wrong and hurtful towards this girl. Right now is probably not a good time to be educating cp about "mob mentality". Do you feel it is actually helpful to minimize or redirect focus away from what happened to this girl? Mob mentality exists in many situations whether it is in sports, the office, or otherwise; Let's support this girl so that the bullies involved are the ones who are being held accountable.
