I was all for this when Eichel was going to get the surgery and play the full season but I don’t get why we would pay such a ridiculous price when we have to go 40 games without Eichel. So if the deal was Tkachuk+conditional 1st for Eichel then sure but on the radio Steinberg and Nault made it sound like Tkachuk, Valimaki, 1st, Zary, and Pelletier/Wolf
If we are downgrading those prospects significantly and putting protection on the pick it gets better but I don’t think this Flames team can afford to be without one of their best forwards for 40 games.
To me the offer is too rich for this stage of the negotiation so Buffalo better kick in some help right now or we shave that offer down significantly

My guess it's more like: Tkachuk, Valimaki, 1st, one of Zary/Pelletier, one of Ruzicka/Phillips/Poirier/Kuznetzov.
They would need to move out a little more salary than this though, Tkachuk + Valimaki = $8.55M
If true, this is reminding me a little bit of 2008-2010.
Tkachuk is like Phaneuf - fan-favourites, former high 1st round picks, and both once thought of as a future captain. Play in their 4th and 5th seasons not as well-received as their play in their first three seasons and mired with rumours about team issues. Obviously Tkachuk is a much better player and won't be getting booed by the fans in a return game. I think he's been ok to start the season and production has been fine, but something still feels off with him. He's not having that big impact on games like he used to.
Mangiapane is Gio - career underdogs who were both passed over in the draft and kept getting better and better. Fits the culture and identity of what the Flames what to be to a tee.
I like Tkachuk, but along as players like Dube, Mangiapane, Coronato are not also moved, it make this easier to swallow.
